Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about DPI and KDP image requirements.

What DPI does KDP require for print books?
Amazon KDP recommends a minimum of 300 DPI for interior images and 300–600 DPI for book covers. For the sharpest results — especially for detailed illustrations or photos — 600 DPI is ideal. Images below 300 DPI may appear blurry or pixelated in print.
What is DPI and why does it matter for printing?
DPI stands for "dots per inch" — it measures how many ink dots a printer places per inch of paper. Higher DPI means more detail and sharper prints. Screen images are typically 72–96 DPI, which looks fine on a monitor but prints blurry. For crisp book printing, you need at least 300 DPI.
Will upscaling make my image sharper?
Upscaling increases the pixel dimensions of your image so it meets DPI requirements at your intended print size. It cannot create new detail that wasn't in the original image. For best results, start with the highest resolution source file available. If your original is very low resolution (e.g., a tiny 100×100px icon), the upscaled result will be larger but may still look soft.
What file formats does KDP accept?
KDP accepts TIFF, JPEG, and PNG for interior images. For book covers submitted via the Cover Creator or as standalone files, JPEG and TIFF are preferred. This tool can export as PNG or JPEG — use PNG for illustrations with sharp edges or text, and JPEG for photographs.
Is my image data safe? Does anything get uploaded?
Absolutely nothing is uploaded. All processing happens entirely in your web browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images never leave your device and are never sent to any server. This tool works offline once the page is loaded.
What source DPI should I enter if I don't know my image's DPI?
If your image came from the web or a screenshot, enter 72 (standard screen resolution). If it came from a digital camera or a mid-quality scan, try 150. If you're unsure, right-click the file → Properties → Details (Windows) or Get Info (Mac) to check the recorded DPI.
Can I process multiple images at once?
Yes! You can drag and drop as many images as you need in one go. All files will be processed and downloaded sequentially. Each output file is renamed with the target DPI appended (e.g., cover_600dpi.png).
